Moving on is not always easy. Some seasons end before we feel ready, and some experiences leave memories that are difficult to forget. A relationship may come to an end, an opportunity may be lost, a mistake may continue to trouble the heart, or circumstances may change in ways that were never expected, but that doesn’t mean you should dust yourself off the past.
Holding on to the past can make it difficult to appreciate what is ahead. There comes a point when healing requires releasing what cannot be changed and trusting God with the next part of the journey. Moving on does not mean pretending that something never happened or acting as though the pain did not matter. It means refusing to allow the past to control the rest of your story.
The Bible contains many examples of people who experienced loss, disappointment, failure, and major changes before entering a new season. God did not ask them to remain where they had been forever. He called them forward.
Paul understood this when he wrote about leaving the things behind and pressing toward what was ahead. The Israelites also had to learn to stop looking back toward Egypt as God led them into a new place. Their stories remind us that sometimes faith requires taking the next step even before the entire path becomes clear.
Moving forward can take time. Some wounds need patience, some lessons need to be learned, and some memories may remain for years. Yet the presence of a difficult past does not mean that the future has nothing good to offer.
These Bible verses about moving on can encourage you to release the past, learn from what happened, and trust God with what comes next.
“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
Paul understood that moving forward sometimes requires refusing to remain focused on what is behind. The past may contain mistakes, disappointments, or even wonderful memories, but it should not prevent you from pursuing what God has placed ahead. There is still purpose beyond what has already happened.
2. Paul Pressed Forward
Philippians 3:13–14 (KJV)
“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
Paul is one of the strongest biblical examples of moving forward. He had a past filled with things he could have allowed to define him, but he chose not to remain there. His attention was fixed on what God had placed ahead.
Moving on does not mean denying the past. It means refusing to let yesterday prevent you from pursuing what lies ahead.
3. The Children of Israel Had to Move Forward
Exodus 14:15 (KJV)
“And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:”
The children of Israel stood before the Red Sea with the Egyptian army behind them. They had every reason to be afraid, yet God told them to “go forward.” Sometimes moving forward requires faith before the path becomes clear. The children of Israel could not see how they would cross the sea, but God already knew what He was going to do.
This is an important reminder when facing a new season. You may not know exactly how everything will work out, but that does not mean there is no way forward. Keep trusting God and take the next step He places before you.
4. God Can Make Something New
Isaiah 43:18–19 (KJV)
“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?”
God reminded His people that He was able to do something new. Sometimes the greatest difficulty in moving forward is expecting the future to look exactly like the past. God can open a different door, create a new opportunity, and lead you into a season you never expected.
5. Trust God With Your Path
Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Moving on can involve many questions. You may not understand why something ended or know exactly what comes next. This passage encourages you to trust God even without having every answer. He can direct your path one step at a time.
6. Do Not Keep Looking Back
Luke 9:62 (KJV)
“And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Moving forward requires attention to the road ahead. Constantly looking back can make it difficult to give your attention to what God is doing now. There is wisdom in learning from the past without allowing it to keep you from moving forward.
7. God Can Restore What Was Lost
Joel 2:25 (KJV)
25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
Some seasons leave people feeling as though valuable time has been wasted. God’s promise of restoration reminds us that a difficult past does not have to define the rest of our lives. He can bring purpose, growth, and blessing out of seasons that once seemed completely lost.
8. Forget What Is Behind and Move Forward
Isaiah 43:18 (KJV)
“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.”
There are times when remembering the past can teach valuable lessons, but there are also moments when constantly revisiting it only keeps old wounds open. God’s Word encourages us to recognize that the past does not have to remain the center of our attention. There can be something new ahead.
9. God Works Through Difficult Experiences
Romans 8:28 (KJV)
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Not everything that happens is good, but God can work through difficult experiences for a greater purpose.
This truth can bring comfort after disappointment. What happened may not be something you would have chosen, yet God can still use the experience to develop wisdom, strengthen faith, and prepare you for what lies ahead.
10. There Is a Time for Every Season
Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV)
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:”
Certain things are meant for one season and not another. People, circumstances can change, opportunities come and go, and certain chapters eventually close. Recognizing that a season has ended can help the heart make room for what comes next.
11. God Gives Strength for the Journey Ahead
Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
Moving forward can be tiring, especially after a painful experience. God can renew the strength needed to continue. You may not have everything figured out today, but you can trust Him to provide strength for each step.
12. Press Forward With Faith
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Faith in Christ brings the promise of a new beginning. The past may be part of your story, but it does not have to determine your identity or your future. God offers the opportunity to walk forward with a renewed heart and a different perspective.
Conclusion
Moving on does not mean forgetting everything that happened. Some experiences become lessons that help shape wisdom, character, and faith. The important thing is not to remain trapped by what has already passed.
There may be moments when the next step feels difficult, but God can provide the strength to take it. Leave room for healing, learn from the past, and trust the Lord with the future. The chapter behind you may have contained pain, disappointment, or mistakes, but it does not have to be the final chapter. God is still working, and there can still be purpose in what lies ahead.
Move forward with faith, trusting God to guide each step. The past cannot be changed, but the future can still be filled with hope, purpose, and new beginnings.
A Prayer for Moving On
Heavenly Father,Thank You for carrying me through every season of my life. Help me release the things I cannot change and give me the strength to move forward with peace in my heart. Heal the wounds that still trouble me and give me wisdom to learn from the past without allowing it to control my future. Help me forgive where forgiveness is needed and let go of anything that is keeping me from growing.
Guide my steps toward the opportunities and purpose You have prepared for me. Give me courage to embrace new beginnings, patience during the healing process, and faith to trust You even when I cannot see what lies ahead.
May the past become a lesson rather than a prison. Lead me into the future with a renewed heart, stronger faith, and confidence in Your plans. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
